Background

I love my job as a lactation consultant. Seeing the relief on a mother’s face when I have helped her breastfeed without pain or tears is priceless.

RN, RM, MN(Ed), IBCLC

My focus is centred on supporting mothers by offering options available for breastfeeding that will work within your family unit. This includes providing support and accurate information about breastfeeding, your baby’s behaviour, settling and sleep strategies.

My philosophy and motivation as a lactation consultant comes from my own breastfeeding experience with my son, our second child. After successfully breastfeeding my daughter, I struggled with an insufficient milk supply so consequently fed almost continuously, night and day.

Unaware that lactation consultants existed, I gave up breastfeeding at three months. Had I been able to access the knowledge and strategies I now know, I feel I would have kept breastfeeding as I had hoped and planned. In spite of my experience as a midwife,  I was a mother in distress and in great need of specific help so that I could continue breastfeeding. I don’t think mothers need to go through what I did, so the opportunity
to become a lactation consultant and help new mothers is one I relish every day.

I qualified as a lactation consultant while working as a hospital midwife; caring for mothers who wanted further support at home with breastfeeding and parenting after discharge from hospital.

Many of my referrals come from obstetricians and paediatricians at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital in Sydney, as well as hospital midwives, early childhood nurses, general practitioners, and from clients I have helped and support ed. I often see clients with their third and fourth babies.

I completed an accredited course in lactation management in Sydney obtaining internationally recognised certification from the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). This represents the gold standard in lactation management. Prior to caring for mothers and babies, I worked as a registered nurse, registered midwife and having completed a Masters in Nursing (Education), as a nurse educator.
