Our Resources section lists useful resources & information I have gained from various websites, publications and associations.

Websites and Publications

While I may occasionally share a personal anecdote that I feel may help or be relevant to a mother, the strategies and suggestions I make related to breastfeeding, settling and sleeping come from evidenced based research. The resources and reading suggestions I have provided form in part the basis on which I base my practice and are provided for you to gather more information as you need.

The 2 most common questions fired at me relate to my thoughts on “controlled crying” and preventing SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). I was never able to let my own babies and children cry and am relieved to know my “instinct” not to practice this technique is well backed up by research and documentation by doctors and scientists.

The Australian Association for Infant Mental Health Inc have written 2 position papers relevant to controlled crying which can be accessed with other information about the mental health of your baby.

Dr McKenna and Dr Sears also have information on this topic, and this information can be located on the following websites:

www.askdrsears.com

With regard to SIDS, another highly emotional issue, I offer the following websites of experts in particular, Dr James McKenna to help parents make informed decisions about what they would feel comfortable with. www.naturalchild.org/james_mckenna

There are a plethora of books on the market that will tell you what you should do with your baby. The books I have suggested again are those I use to support my practice and I offer them to you as a balance to some of the more hard line “this is the only way” approach. As a lactation consultant I head the list up with books relevant to breastfeeding with the others listed below in no particular order. You do not by any means need all of these books so try borrowing and swapping with friends until you find you think especially suits your needs.
